World centres/Ashrams for contemporary spirituality
We are living in the fastest and most changing time ever. The world has turned into a global village. Technological development is moving at high speed. We are in the time of fast communication and limitless information. A result of this happening is a complete new type of mind: modern mind.
Modern mind creates the modern man with all the blessings and curses that a mind's duality is providing. Modern man is the most informed, most confused, most intelligent and most crazy and uprooted human being who has walked on this earth.
This situation asks - no it SCREAMS by now - for a new balance, for a new contemporary spirituality, which can provide practical and, to modern people, understandable answers. A contemporary spirituality needs to be meditative and scientific, non-traditional and up-to-date, utterly creative and flexible to go into new experiments, which were never tried before. This can be the only contemporary response of a modern mystic to a completely changed and still fast changing humanity. New combinations of old and new techniques need to be created and there can be only one criteria: to use whatsoever works to help individuals to turn inside, to discover themselves, to find a balance, to become more human, more centred. Let me say it again: whatsoever works for transformation, for transcending suffering to bliss is the right tool to be used.
The BuddhaHill creation is a growing experiment (right now 26 members, including two children and many friends) and I would like to introduce it as the starting point of this vision I call “a world centre for contemporary spirituality”. A world centre because it is open to the people of this world and works for the people of this world. I still hope to find a few more contemporary mystics with the same understanding, so
we can play together for the benefit of the people who are searching for alternatives and a spirituality which is not bound to tradition and organization. I'm not at all interested in a new organization, a true spiritual approach can only be individual. Individuals can work and play together on a simple down-to-earth practical level, so that the spirit can be enjoyed in the body visible and feelable, for everybody sensitive and intelligent, directly in the here and now. That "all is one" is for most people just an intellectual information. Now it is time for the ones who are living this oneness to make it a visible, feelable experience for people on the way through playing together on all the levels of human existence and their ways of expression.
The seeds are sown by pioneers like Gurdjieff, who worked in a very unusual way to create a man without quotation marks, a balanced being, by Osho, the Buddha of this century, who worked on the synthesis of East and West, called “Zorba the Buddha - the New Man”, by Eckart Tolle, expressing a vision in his book "A new earth" and there are certainly more, who were or are just not so visible.
Alright, it is an experiment never tried before, to my understanding just an up to date answer to our time. Individual efforts/non-efforts are great, but not enough any more to cope with the exploding humanity and the global problems as a result of it. So there is no harm in trying to make the oneness more visible, together with a few other individuals, which are empty enough to laugh at the illusion of separation, to enjoy the dance - the play together.
One can create alone and also together. This is richness, a feast of compassionate creativity, an expression of the New Man, the New Mystic. The visible, touchable growth of a contemporary, global spirituality, an invitation for the play were all is one, all is bliss, let's celebrate it together.
PS: This letter happened through the inspiring ongoing connection which I found four years ago with a man who is called by his friends Gurudev.
